Becoming an Autónomo in Tenerife: Complete Guide
If you want to work legally as a tradesperson in Tenerife, you need to register as an autónomo (self-employed worker). Here's how.
Who Needs to Register?
Anyone performing regular paid work in Spain — including plumbers, electricians, builders, cleaners, painters, and all other tradespeople — must be registered as either:
- Autónomo (sole trader/self-employed)
- Sociedad Limitada (S.L.) — a limited company (better for larger operations)
Requirements
For EU/EEA citizens:
- NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero)
- Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE (EU citizen registration)
- Spanish bank account
For non-EU citizens:
- Valid residence and work permit (permiso de residencia y trabajo)
- NIE
- Spanish bank account
Step-by-Step Registration
- Get your NIE — at the Oficina de Extranjeros or police station
- Register with Hacienda (Tax Agency) — file form 036 or 037 to register for tax
- Register with Seguridad Social — file form TA.0521 to start paying social security
- Choose your IAE code — the activity classification that matches your trade
- Get liability insurance — seguro de responsabilidad civil (highly recommended)
- Open a business bank account — separate from personal finances
Costs of Being Autónomo
| Expense | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|
| Social Security (cuota) — first year | €80/month (tarifa plana) |
| Social Security — after first year | €230 – €400+/month |
| Liability insurance | €20 – €50/month |
| Accountant (gestoría) | €50 – €100/month |
| IGIC filing (quarterly) | Included with accountant |
| Income tax (IRPF) | 15–20% of net income |
The Tarifa Plana Discount
New autónomos in Spain benefit from the tarifa plana — a reduced social security rate:
- First 12 months: €80/month
- Months 13–18: 50% reduction
- Months 19–24: 30% reduction
- After 24 months: full rate based on your income
Canary Islands Tax Advantages
The Canary Islands have special tax benefits:
- IGIC instead of IVA — 7% vs. 21% on the mainland
- ZEC (Zona Especial Canaria) — reduced corporate tax rate of 4% for qualifying businesses
- RIC (Reserva para Inversiones en Canarias) — tax incentive for reinvesting profits
- Bonificación por residencia — additional deductions for Canary Islands residents
Tips for Tradespeople
- Hire a good gestor/accountant — they handle all paperwork and tax filings for €50–€100/month
- Keep all receipts — materials, fuel, tools are all deductible expenses
- Issue proper facturas — builds trust and is legally required
- Join TruTrade — get found by expat clients who need your services
- Consider an S.L. — if your income exceeds €40,000/year, a limited company may be more tax-efficient
